What You See Isn't Casting The Light

Two people can look at the same thing and both be telling the truth. That's not the problem. The problem is what happens next — when each stops at their shadow and calls it the object. This piece uses a simple visual argument to explain the difference between subjective truth and objective reality, and asks the question that almost never gets asked: who aimed the lights.
Here's something most people believe without ever saying out loud.
There's no way we're both right. Not on this. Not when we're on opposite sides. One of us is seeing the truth and one of us isn't. And if I'm being honest, I'm pretty sure I know which one is which.
And here's the thing - that feeling isn't arrogance. It's logic. How could two people look at the same thing and both be substantially correct when everything they're seeing points in opposite directions? That doesn't make sense. Something has to give.
Unless the problem isn't who's right. Unless the problem is what we think we're looking at.
This is an object.
It exists independently of who's looking at it, what angle they're standing at, what they think about it, or whether they're paying attention to it at all.
This is what we mean when we say objective reality. Not a claim. Not a perspective. The thing itself.
Now take away the light.
The object didn't go anywhere. It's still there. It hasn't changed. But without light - without something directing your attention toward it - it might as well not exist for you. It's outside your field entirely.
This matters more than it sounds.
Now add walls. And let the light fill the space the way light usually does - distributed, diffuse, coming from everywhere and nowhere in particular.
Notice what appears on the walls. Soft shapes. Approximate. A little hard to make out. Not identical, but not wildly different either. Close enough that if two people were describing what they saw, they might actually agree on the rough outlines.
This is what shared perception looks like when attention is distributed and nobody is directing it. Imperfect. Approximate. But not irresolvable.
Now watch what happens when the light changes.
One focused beam. Aimed deliberately from a specific angle.
The shape on that wall snaps into definition. Sharp edges. High contrast. Unmistakable.
Here's the thing about that - intensity reads as clarity. The sharper the shadow, the more certain the observer becomes that they're seeing something real and definitive. The focus feels like proof.
Second beam. Opposite angle.
Same object. Different wall. Different shadow. Equally sharp. Equally certain.
Two audiences now. Each looking at a high contrast image. Each convinced they're seeing the truth. And from where each of them is standing - they are.
And they're not wrong.
Each shadow is an accurate projection of the object from that angle. A true report from a particular vantage point. That's what makes this so difficult.
The problem was never that one side was lying. The problem is that both sides stopped at the shadow and called it the object.
Stand exactly where either of those beams is coming from, and you'd swear you were looking at the whole picture. From that angle, the shadow isn't a partial view of something larger. It's just what's there. Complete. Unambiguous. That's what certainty actually feels like from the inside.
And the person standing at the other beam feels exactly the same way, looking at a completely different shape.
Two people. Same object. Two complete truths. No overlap. No negotiation possible. Because you can't negotiate between two people who each believe they're holding the whole thing.
The object hasn't changed.
It was never the shadows.
So here's the question that almost never gets asked - not which shadow is right. Not whose truth is more complete.
Who aimed the lights.
Because the shadows didn't cast themselves at those walls. The beams didn't appear on their own. Something - or someone - decided what you would see, from which angle, and with how much intensity.
And if you've been arguing about the shape on the wall this whole time, you've been exactly where you were supposed to be.
The object is still there. It hasn't moved. It doesn't need you to agree about it in order to keep existing.
But you're not going to see the truth completely by staring at the wall.
